"I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?" (Nehemiah 6:3, NKJV)
Often times, the enemy will send people and
other forms of distractions in your life to keep you from carrying out
the assignment that God has given you. It's during these times that
you've got to stay focused so you won't be hindered from bringing
certain things to pass.
In
our text, we discover that the enemy is trying to distract Nehemiah
from rebuilding the wall. Since the wall has been torn down, Nehemiah is
seeking to rebuild it because it serves to protect God's people from
opposing forces. In so many words Nehemiah informs the enemy that he's
not coming down because he's "doing a great work." He refuses to come
down and entertain his opposition because he recognizes that they are
not worth putting his assignment on hold.
Please
understand that the enemy will send folk into your life in an effort to
get you to come down on their level. He will place distractions in your
life to try to get you off track from what God is calling you to do. In
those times you have to refuse to come down because, just like
Nehemiah, you've worked too hard to get where you are. You have to
consider the time, sacrifice, energy, and tears that it's taken for you
to get to where you are and that should be enough for you to refuse to
come down. Sometimes you've got to stay focused on what you're trying to
accomplish and that will keep you from getting diverted.
A
final insight that I wish to leave with you pertains to perseverance.
Nehemiah's opposition didn't give up trying to distract him when he
turned down their initial request. Instead, they continued to try to
hinder him from rebuilding the wall by requesting his presence on
several occasions. In verse four, we're made aware of Nehemiah's
perseverance because we're told that after the enemy sought to distract
him a fourth time, he said, "I answered them in the same manner." Don't
let the enemy get to you by trying to wear you down. Stand firm on your
foundation and handle your assignment!
