In hiring the nearly two hundred employees at Eastern Star Church, I have never once asked an interviewee about his or her car, house, or clothes. I'm not interested in the external things because they aren't important in determining what they will be able to do for the church. It is what's on the inside that gets them in. But, after they are employed, these individuals can use their income to buy a nice car, house, and clothes. It's their inner lives that open a way for them to address their external circumstances.

There are some persons who go through life trying to get ahead, trying to position themselves for promotions, trying to get their foot in just the right door so that they can improve their status in life. They are so focused on the external that they neglect their inner lives. Then they are upset when someone else gets what they wanted, and they just don't understand how that could have possibly happened. In God's kingdom, if our focus is on the spiritual matters, the material things just follow naturally.

God, too often we have focused on getting what we want and what we think we need without regard for who You want us to be. Help us to turn our thoughts and attention away from external things and focus on our walk with You. Make us over, dear God, from the inside out, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
