A diamond--a gem, multi-faceted, multi-dimensional and when in its completed form, one that shines ever so brightly.  That is what God says you are.  But what exactly is a diamond in the rough?  What does that mean?  Let's go deeper into the diamond first.

A diamond as defined by Webster's is--a colorless, crystallion extremely hard form of carbon, valued as a gem and as an abrasive or cutting tool.  Rough is defined as; having an uneven surface--lacking finish and polish--disordered or ragged.

A rough, uncut diamond resembles a dull piece of glass with a distorted, octahedral shape. A diamond gem with its characteristic sparkle and fire is obtained by skillful cutting, grinding, and polishing of the stone's flat facets.

Fewer than 20% of diamonds mined each year are suitable for use as gems.  (Grolier Encyclopedia of Knowledge 1991)

The finished product is something many females "uuh and aah" over and enjoy tremendously (and some men do as well).  Heard the phrase "diamonds are a girl's best friend"?  Well before they're finished I doubt seriously that to be the case.  But oh my goodness, when placed in a piece of jewelry in its completed form, we purr like a kitten when the recipient of one.

Now imagine yourself, lost, wandering through life aimlessly, extremely hardened by situations and circumstances, life is in a total state of chaos, but then a pivotal point takes place and you have an encounter with Jesus.

He starts to clean and polish you through showing you his unconditional love.  He removes all of your guilt and shame replacing it with love, joy, peace, wisdom, knowledge and understanding and you begin to shine.  Yes, the diamond in you begins shining brightly and you are no longer "in the rough".  He replaced the roughness with his Word.  He gives you grace, mercy and unconditional love.

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NIV

A diamond, in its completed form, sparkles and dazzles like no other stone, and so can you so that men may see your good works and give glory to God.
