Well, that didn't last. President Obama went out to Osawatomie, Kansas, to deliver what the White House told us in hushed tones was a major address. He proclaimed it "the defining issue of our time." It's more than that, it's the "make or break moment for the middle class and for all those struggling to make it into the middle class."

It was good to see President Obama link his Osawatomie Speech to Kansas history. Some commentators said Mr. Obama was "channeling Roosevelts." Especially, Theodore. It delighted some that Mr. Obama donned the mantle of the Republican Roosevelt.

President Reagan's famous dictum, which he often quoted to Mikhail Gorbachev in Russian, was Trust but Verify. (In Russian, it rhymes: Doverai, no proverai.) President Obama has recognized that Reagan was a "transformational" president. He says he gave the old man credit, though he never gave him his vote.
