Who Would Jesus Vote For? by Joseph C. Phillips
My son saw the caption
on the magazine
cover. I did not. I was late for work and headed towards the door.
"Daddy," he asked. "Who would Jesus vote for?" He then pointed in the
direction of a magazine rack and repeated his question. Apparently one
of the news weeklies had asked the question on its cover. "I think none
of the above." I answered. "Well," he pondered. "If Jesus wouldn't vote
for any of the candidates why would you?"

Man who has a blog on Senator Barack Obama's Campaign Website Files $70
Million Suit Against Bible Publishers over Homosexual Verses
A homosexual man who
has a blog on Sen.
Barack Obama's campaign website is suing two major Christian publishers
for violating his constitutional rights and causing emotional pain,
because the Bible versions they publish refer to homosexuality as a
sin. Bradley LaShawn Fowler, 39, of Canton, Mich., is seeking $60
million from Zondervan and another $10 million from Thomas Nelson
Publishing in lawsuits filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern
District of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Infidelity Talk Surrounds Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
Armed with newly
obtained text messages,
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is poised to accuse Detroit Mayor
Kwame Kilpatrick of cheating on his wife with multiple women in an
expansion of the perjury case against him, Worthy’s office
confirmed Monday. The decision, mentioned briefly in a court hearing
last Thursday, suggests that Worthy is prepared to aggressively rebut a
campaign by defense attorneys to discredit text message evidence
compiled against the mayor.

Jesse
Jackson (With a Little Help From James Dobson) Just Handed the White
House to Obama, by Frank Schaeffer
The Rev. Jesse Jackson
and Dr. James Dobson
(of "Focus On The Family") must be in a conspiracy to get Senator Obama
elected. With enemies like these Obama doesn't need friends. Obama is
fortunate. Nothing will calm America's fears about voting for him more
than the fact that the national village idiots are lining up to attack
him. There is a strange symmetry between the whispered insults directed
at Senator Obama by the Rev. Jesse Jackson -- caught on tape and
recycled by FOX--and the public attacks made a few weeks ago by James
Dobson.

The Spirit of Assassination, by
Dr. Yvonne Capehart
“As
I
look around today at the Body of Christ worldwide, my spirit is
grieved. Christian leaders are engaging in adulterous affairs and other
immoral acts. They’re being caught up in the mismanagement of
church funds for personal gain. They’re divorcing their
spouses
in record numbers. They’re being lured into illicit drug use.
Even more alarming to me is the fact that more and more leaders are
simply becoming weary and giving up on their faith. What’s
going
on?

Atheist Soldier Sues Army for
Religious Discrimination
When
Specialist Jeremy Hall
held a meeting last July for atheists and freethinkers at Camp Speicher
in Iraq, he was excited, he said, to see an officer attending. But
minutes into the talk, the officer, Maj. Freddy J. Welborn, began to
berate Specialist Hall and another soldier about atheism, Specialist
Hall wrote in a sworn statement. “People like you are not
holding
up the Constitution and are going against what the founding fathers,
who were Christians, wanted for America!” Major Welborn said,
according to the statement.

Why Jesse Jackson has an Obama
Problem, by Earl Ofari Hutchinson
A
plainly irritated Jesse
Jackson obviously didn't mean that he would cut Obama's n...ts off. The
crude, salty street talk was simply an unguarded moment's outburst from
a frustrated Jackson at Obama's recent political somersaults. Jackson,
of course, took much deserved heat from his son Jesse Jr. and just
about everyone else who has an opinion on him, his language and Obama.
But what is lost in the leap to beat up on Jackson is this: Is he right
to be frustrated by Obama, and is there anything new about his
frustration with him?

Is there a Manliness Crisis in
America? by Veronica Hendrix
*It’s
an interesting
theory - a manliness crisis in America. Harvard professor
Harvey
Mansfield asserts that premise in his book entitled
“Manliness.” He defines manliness as
“confidence in
the face of risk.” And he believes that manliness
is losing
its place in a society that has moved away from placing emphasis on
gender roles in favor of gender neutrality. Mansfield points to
feminism as the reason.

On "Being Saved"
in Black America
While growing up in a very
religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being
Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and
mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such —
whatever it was.

Author of the
Week: Raina Shaw
Raina Shaw, best known as a savvy entertainment pro who has worked in
radio, the recording industry
and in publishing, has recently added another title to her impressive
resume—author. A Los Angeles native, Ms. Shaw has worked with
top
artists such as Bob Marley, L.A. Reid, Kenny
“Babyface”
Edmonds, Soul II Soul, Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary, Eric Benet, Sean Paul
and others as a concert promoter. Additionally, as a consultant she has
worked for several music executives and record labels such as Airtight
Entertainment and Anansi/JAD Records; she was associate producer of the
highly successful Urban Fest L.A. held at the University of Southern
California; and she has also delved into the film world, conducting
interviews with several gospel stars for the film “Higher
Ground.” As an author Ms. Shaw hopes that her words will help
her
fulfill her “assignment in the body of Christ.”
“Because even with all the worldly accomplishments I still
suffered from low self esteem and was often operating outside of
God’s will in many of my endeavors,” she says.
“The
Lord placed Ridiculous Situations on my heart because a lot of the
suffering amongst single believers stems from not putting God first and
not being serious about our assignment in the body of Christ. I know
that once we begin to put first things first that total fulfillment in
every area of life will manifest.” E-mail

Minister of the
Week: Vickie Winans
The Woman to
Woman: Songs of Life CD
is the perfect capstone for a 20-year career that has seen Vickie
Winans receive many accolades including 6 Grammy Award nominations; 8
Stellar Awards, and an NAACP Image Award. In that span of time,
she’s released 9 projects, with 2003’s
“BRINGING IT
ALL TOGETHER” debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel
Chart. It’s doubtful that Vickie’s parents knew that
their
7th child would be a Billboard-charting gospel icon. But while singing
her first solo in church at the age of 8, it’s certain that
Aaron
and Mattie Bowman saw something special in their
daughter. Growing
up in church in Detroit, MI, she honed her skills and belted out songs
stunning audiences time and time again. Eventually, she
connected
with the Winans family who set her on the path to gospel
superstardom. Decades later, Vickie Winans is not only known
as
an award-winning gospel recording artist, but she’s revered
as a
consummate business woman that heads of Viviane, Inc. where she manages
herself and books hundreds of shows per year. She is also the
President of her own record label, Destiny Joy Records. An actress and
a comedienne as well, she’s so thankful for all that God has

family,
great friends, and a rewarding career!” E-mail

Black
Christian History
George Lisle
- February 23, 1814 -- The foundation of the Baptist Mission in Jamaica
had been laid by a few black and "coloured" men who had gone to the
island from America in 1782. Some of them had been slaves in the United
States who had been granted liberty by their owners. Some were
Christians when they arrived in Jamaica, while others had been
converted after their arrival. The most noted were George Lisle (the
first ordained black in America), George Lewis, George Gibb and Moses
Baker. It was chiefly through Moses Baker's recruiting efforts that the
English Baptist Missionary Society took up missionary work in Jamaica.
The first missionary sent from England in response to Baker's pleas was
John Rowe, who landed at Montego Bay, February 23, 1814.
