Who Killed Youth Pastor, Rhoda McFarland? Could it have been her Former Church Members?
Police
in the Chicago area, investigating the slaying of five women in a Lane
Bryant clothing store earlier this year, have sent 11 officers from
Illinois to Texas to investigate what role a church may have played in
the killings. The murder by an unknown gunman, previously reported as a
botched robbery, now invites more sinister speculation as police draw a
suspected connection between the collapse of a Chicago-area church and
one of the shooting victims, Rhoda McFarland.

(VIDEO) Bill Clinton: 'I Am Not a Racist'
Former president Bill Clinton has been
trying to keep his political opinions in check in order to turn back to
his international work. Still, he got a little testy in an interview
Sunday with ABC's Kate Snow, telling her he is "not a racist" even as
he avoided delving into specifics about what happened in the Democratic
presidential primary. The interview, taped in a quick stop in Liberia,
will air Monday on "Good Morning America."

"The Gay Church": The Anglican Church is Being Ridiculed Due to Endless Debate on Sexuality
The Anglican Communion is ridiculed as "the
Gay Church" and is losing members over homosexuality, say bishops
meeting in Canterbury. Mission is being damaged and confidence in the
validity of the Anglican Communion is being hurt, they say. The
bishops' comments appear in a draft of the final Reflections document
of the Lambeth Conference. About 670 bishops from 38 provinces
worldwide have contributed to the document after meeting in
African-style indaba, or discussion, groups during the 2½ week
conference at Kent University.

Criswell College President Accuses First Baptist Church of Dallas of Wanting to Sell School's Assets
A
simmering feud over control of Criswell College has boiled over, with
its president and some trustees accusing leaders of First Baptist
Church of Dallas of plotting to sell the school's assets to finance a
new church sanctuary. Criswell President Jerry Johnson late this week
criticized the Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Dallas,
which founded the Dallas Bible school and controls appointment of its
trustees. As pastor, Dr. Jeffress is automatically chancellor of
Criswell College, which has a small campus on Gaston Avenue and
operates a radio station, KCBI-FM (90.0).

Harvest Crusade at Angel Stadium takes on New Urgency after the Death of Pastor's Son
The
three-day evangelistic gathering, which features Christian rock and
last year attracted more than 100,000 people, gets a more somber source
of momentum. It was a question that many were thinking, but no one
dared ask. When Christopher Laurie, son of Harvest Christian Fellowship
leader Greg Laurie, was killed in a car crash July 24, the first order
of business was tending to the family -- particularly Christopher's
wife, Brittany, who is due to give birth later this year, and their
young daughter, Stella.

Obama Opposes Slavery Reparations
Democratic
presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the
descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and
leaders. The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first
black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy
of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
"I have said in the past -- and I'll repeat again -- that the best
reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs
for people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.

Study: To Sleep Better, Perchance to Live Longer
Shakespeare
once called sleep the "balm of hurt minds." Bodies, too, apparently.
People with the severe form of apnea, which interferes with sleep, are
several times more likely to die from any cause than are folks without
the disorder, researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal
Sleep. The findings in the 18-year study confirm smaller studies that
have indicated an increased risk of death for people with apnea, also
known as sleep-disordered breathing.

McCain Vetting Virginia Rep. Cantor for VP
John
McCain's campaign has asked Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor for personal
documents as the Republican presidential candidate steps up his search
for a running mate, The Associated Press has learned. Cantor, 45, the
chief deputy minority whip in the House, has been mentioned among
several Republicans as a possible running mate for McCain. A Republican
familiar with the conversations between Cantor and the McCain campaign
said Cantor has been asked to turn over documents, but did not know
specifically what records were sought.

Sunday (August 10) he will make a statement afterwards in which he

As Tensions Rise for Egypt's Christians, Officials Call Clashes Secular
A
monastery was ransacked in January. In May, monks there were kidnapped,
whipped and beaten and ordered to spit on the cross. Christian-owned
jewelry stores were robbed over the summer. The rash of violence was so
bad that one prominent Egyptian writer worried it had become "open
season" on the nation's Christians. Does Egypt face a sectarian
problem? Not according to its security officials, who insist that each
dispute represents a "singular incident" tied to something other than
faith. In the case of the monastery and the monks, officials said the
conflict was essentially a land dispute between the church and local
residents.

Mandela Calls for Unity in South Africa's Ruling Party
Nelson
Mandela called for unity in South Africa's governing party at a rally
marking his 90th birthday Saturday, saying the African National
Congress was responsible for making him the person he is today. The
Nobel Peace Prize winner urged tens of thousands at the rally to focus
their celebrations not on him but rather the party that helped bring
about the end of white racist rule in South Africa. "Do not celebrate
an individual," he said. "Celebrate the achievements and reaffirm the

Writer, Frank Marshall Davis, Offered a Young Barack Obama Advice on Life
At key
moments in his adolescence, Barack Obama could not turn to a father he
hardly knew. Instead, he looked to a left-leaning black journalist and
poet for advice on living in a world of black and white. Frank Marshall
Davis had his opinions. He once argued that the public schools of his
youth prepared neither blacks nor whites for "life in a multiracial,
democratic nation." He called hypocrisy "a national trait of American
whites." Advocating civil rights amid segregation, Davis wrote in 1949:
"I refuse to settle for anything less than all the rights which are due
me under the Constitution."

Solzhenitsyn told The Associated Press his father died late Sunday at

accounts of the years he spent in the Soviet gulag, Solzhenitsyn's
novels and non-fiction works exposed the secret history of the vast
prison system that enslaved millions. The accounts riveted his
countrymen and earned him years of bitter exile, but international
renown.

While growing up in a very

whatever it was.

Music
Minister of the
Week: Dorinda Clark Cole
She’s
been called “the Rose of Gospel,” “the church
girl,” and “evangelist” but more than anything else,
three time Grammy award winner Dorinda Clark Cole is a fired up sister
for Christ and one of the most gifted vocalists in the music world
today. Carrying on the legacy of her mother, mass choir director
pioneer, the late Mattie Moss Clark, along with her award winning
contemporary gospel pioneering sisters who have influenced a generation
of singers, Dorinda Clark Cole boldly comes forth with her third solo
album, TAKE IT BACK. She utilizes her famous vocal runs and preaching
on the jazz infused “Faithful,” which gives the message
that if you are faithful over a few things God will make you ruler over
many, if you remain faithful through your trials. The soul stirring
ballad “Yesterday,” showcases Dorinda’s multi-octave
vocal range and will fill you with a calming message of peace and hope
that comes after the storms of life have passed. It let’s
you know that although the situation might seem bad, it will be over
tomorrow. “If I Were,” the praise ballad sends a message of
gratitude unto the Lord that will usher in a spirit of praise. With
songs that inspire, encourage and uplift, TAKE IT BACK is another
landmark project from the Clark dynasty. So what is her hope for
this shining release? She simply says, “I want it to reach
avenues that we feel that it cannot to go, I want people to not give up
and know they can get through it.” I want it to reach those who
are strung out on drugs. I want them to be able to hand it over
to other drug abusers and say listen to it and have it bless their
lives.” E-mail: fks130@gmail.com. Website: www.dorindaclarkcole.net.

Christian History
Elizabeth A. Coles was
born in Liberia, the daughter of missionaries. Her family returned to
Virginia in 1893. After high school, Coles wanted to be a missionary,
but as there was no support for unmarried female missionaries, she
prepared for a career as a teacher. One day she received a letter from
Edward H. Bouey, also a child of missionaries. At their first meeting,
he proposed to her, and they soon married. The couple went to Liberia,
where they continued her parents’ work, ran a school, and began a
hospital. In 1929 they returned to Richmond with their children and an
adopted African youth. Bouey became a public school teacher but found
time to study theology at Virginia Union University and to earn a
master’s degree in education from Columbia University. Knowing of
the lack of training available for ministers’ wives, Bouey
proposed a national association for them. Her idea was well received in
the region, and the first chapter of the National Association of
Ministers’ Wives was founded in Richmond in 1939. During the next
year, Bouey organized other chapters in Virginia and corresponded with
ministers’ wives throughout the United States. The first national
conference took place in Richmond in 1941, and Bouey was elected
president, a post she held until her death. Over the next sixteen
years, Bouey oversaw members from more than thirty states and from West
Africa; the establishment of the organization’s journal,
Ministers’ Wives Herald; and the purchase of a building in
Richmond. Since Bouey’s death the NAMW has become the
International Association of Ministers’ Wives and
Ministers’ Widows, with more than 40,000 members.
