Sparks Fly at Black Caucus
Meeting (Obama
Remark offends Rep. Dianne Watson)
A
Thursday afternoon meeting between Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and other
members of the Congressional Black Caucus grew tense and emotional for
a moment -- perhaps illustrating that weeks after Sen. Hillary Clinton,
D-N.Y., suspended her presidential campaign, some nerves remain frayed.
Most of the meeting was cordial, and after a presentation by Obama's
pollster, many members of the CBC had nothing but pleasant exchanges
with the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. But not everyone.

Bynum-Weeks Marriage is Over for
Real (Juanita Bynum Admits they had Sex during their Separation)
They
appeared to be a match
made in heaven, but toward the end not even prayer could keep them
together. The stormy marriage of national evangelist Juanita Bynum and
Bishop Thomas W. Weeks III —- temporarily calmed by a night
of passion —- was dissolved Friday in a Gwinnett County
courtroom. Both Bynum and Weeks expressed relief and a measure of joy
that their marriage, marked by an elaborate televised wedding, a
high-profile ministry and a parking lot fight, was over.

Another Colorado
Mega-church Pastor Resigns over Homosexual Activity; at the
same
time, former mega-pastor, Ted Haggard, who was caught up in a similar
scandal, returned to the Colorado Springs area to live
In
a tearful videotaped message Sunday to his congregation, the senior
pastor of a thriving evangelical megachurch in south metro Denver
confessed to sexual relations with other men and announced he had
voluntarily resigned his pulpit. A month ago, the Rev. Paul Barnes of
Grace Chapel in Doug las County preached to his 2,100-member
congregation about integrity and grace in the aftermath of the Ted
Haggard drugs-and-gay-sex scandal. Now, the 54-year-old Barnes joins
Haggard as a fallen evangelical minister who preached that
homosexuality was a sin but grappled with a hidden life.

Opponents of Marriage Amendment
File Suit to Remove it From the November Ballot, Silencing the Voters
The
following statement was
issued today by ProtectMarriage.com -- Opponents of the California
Marriage Amendment, which would restore marriage in California as only
a man and a woman, filed a petition today asking the California Supreme
Court to remove the proposed initiative from the November ballot,
thereby silencing voters on this important issue. Based on the recent
California Supreme Court's ruling that led to the issuance of marriage
licenses to same-sex partners this week, today's lawsuit contends that
restoring the definition of marriage in the State Constitution cannot
be legally accomplished by voter initiative, but rather must be passed
through a different process for constitutional "revisions."

Whites Largely 'Comfortable'
with a Black President
A new
Washington Post-ABC News poll
finds that 90 percent of whites in the country are "comfortable" with a
black president, while fewer whites, about two-thirds, said they would
be "entirely comfortable." The poll seeks to explore attitudes about
race as Sen. Barack Obama ramps up his historic run to become the
nation's first black president. Just over half of whites in the new
poll called Obama a "risky" choice for the White House, while
two-thirds said his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, is a "safe"
pick.

The New
Children’s Book by Super Bowl Winning Coach, Tony Dungy,
titled, You Can Do It! Teaches
Children that They Can Accomplish Anything They Set Their Minds To (In
Stores Nationwide, July 8, 2008)
It
can be frustrating when it seems everyone is doing their
life’s calling
and is happy doing it, but you are still searching to fulfill and
pursue your life’s passion. Such was the case with third
grader,
Linden, little brother to Tony Dungy, and the youngest in the family.
It seemed everyone in the family had found their special talent all
except Linden. Because of this, he lacked that self-motivation to do
anything. But, with encouragement from his parents, a special push from
big brother, Tony, and inspiration from God, Linden begins to soar as
he learns that if he dreams big and has faith in God and in himself, he
can accomplish anything he sets his mind to.

(VIDEO) Mugabe's Opponent,
Tsvangirai's risky gamble of "quitting" needs regional backing
Zimbabwe's
Morgan Tsvangirai has
gambled his political career by pulling out of an election run-off and
he must now count on regional action as well as sympathy to have a hope
of unseating President Robert Mugabe. In a free election, the
opposition leader would have been well placed to win next Friday's vote
after beating Mugabe in the first round, but he announced on Sunday
that political violence made a fair ballot impossible. The announcement
was hedged though -- with a plea to Africa and the world to intervene
in the crisis.

Obama
campaign targets black voters -- carefully
Strategists believe
they've identified a new and potentially decisive Democratic electorate
in at least five battleground states. The trick lies in wooing them
without alienating whites. As
they ponder a political map that has spelled defeat for Democrats in
the last two presidential elections, Barack Obama's campaign
strategists are quietly laying plans to draw African American voters to
the polls in unprecedented numbers by capitalizing on the excitement
over the prospect of electing the nation's first black president. Obama
strategists believe they have identified a gold mine of new and
potentially decisive Democratic voters in at least five battleground
states -- voters who failed to turn out in the past but can be
mobilized this time because Obama's candidacy is historic and his
cash-rich campaign can afford the costly task of identifying and
motivating such supporters.

Home Not-So-Sweet Home, By Paul Krugman
“Owning
a home lies at the
heart of the American dream.” So declared President Bush in
2002,
introducing his “Homeownership Challenge”
— a set of
policy initiatives that were supposed to sharply increase
homeownership, especially for minority groups. Oops. While
homeownership rose as the housing bubble inflated, temporarily giving
Mr. Bush something to boast about, it plunged — especially
for
African-Americans — when the bubble popped. Today, the
percentage
of American families owning their own homes is no higher than it was
six years ago, and it’s a good bet that by the time Mr. Bush
leaves the White House homeownership will be lower than it was when he
moved in.

Outreach to Blacks as Border Patrol Grows
Nearly
1,500 miles from his post
at the Mexican border, Cyril V. Atherton, a Border Patrol agent,
embarked on one of his trickiest missions. He was here recruiting young
blacks to an agency few had ever heard of, trying to entice them to the
hot, arid Southwest, where few blacks live, for a job that requires
learning Spanish proficient enough to know if their lives are in danger
while arresting as many as 100 people at a time. Any questions?
“I’m just thinking about the snakes,”
said Cassandra
Holland, crinkling her nose after watching a promotional video filled
with agents in adventurous exploits in the desert.

Iran Calls Israel 'Dangerous
Regime'
Iran called Israel a ‘dangerous
regime’ on
Saturday after a US paper reported that the Air Force (IAF) had carried
out a large military exercise, apparently a rehearsal for a potential
bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. The comments by Iran's government
spokesman came a day after the UN nuclear watchdog chief said a
military strike on Iran would turn the Middle East into a fireball and
prompt Tehran to launch a crash course to build nuclear weapons.

On "Being Saved"
in Black America
While growing up in a very
religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being
Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and
mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such —
whatever it was.
