Obama Defends Overseas Trip
Presidential contender
Barack Obama defended his decision to travel to Europe and the Middle
East on Saturday, saying that problems encountered by Americans at home
are often best dealt with by working with allies overseas. Obama, who
spoke to reporters after wrapping up talks with British Prime Minister
Gordon Brown, said he wasn't sure if there would be any immediate
political impact from the trip - and that he wouldn't be surprised if
there was a dip in some of the polls in the week since he left home.
People in America, he said, are worried about gas prices and home
foreclosures.

A detective working a criminal case against
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said coincidence led him to a house to try to
deliver a subpoena. Brian White wasn't prepared for what he said
followed: a physical confrontation with the beefy mayor that involved a
profanity-laced tirade by Kilpatrick and a possible hip fracture for

Homeschooling Advocate: Public Schools all about the Benjamins
A home-schooling advocate says a recent
case in which half the students in a big city school district failed a
test after being provided the answers is just more proof that U.S.
public schools have failed miserably at educating students. The school
district of Rochester, New York, provided students and teachers with
the questions and answers for a required test for seventh- and
eighth-graders. The test covered four subjects: English, math, science,
and social studies. Not only did the district deny that there was
anything wrong with providing students with the answer key -- but half
the students failed the test anyway.

over with his sport utility vehicle, authorities said. WTLR station
manager Mark VanOuse said the station received a tip around 10 a.m.
that someone armed with a shotgun was asking people for the address of
the radio station and for money. Police got the same tip and went to
the station, Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said.

Low Numbers at International Christian Retail Show
After a
lackluster International Christian Retail Show one year ago in Atlanta,
the CBA was clearly hoping that a return to family-friendly Orlando in
2008 would mean a jump in flagging show attendance. The organizers had
good reason for optimism: when the meeting was held in Orlando back in
1999, a record-breaking 14,694 people came. However, the Disney magic
did not materialize at last week's trade show which ended July 17, with
total attendance of 7,448--the lowest numbers since the 1980s, and well
off last year's already limp showing of 9,266.

Hotel Porn: the Amenity that Draws Enmity
In
thousands of hotel rooms across the country, a world of explicit sex is
just a click down the TV menu from the PG-13- rated realm of Baby Mama
and What Happens in Vegas. Pay-per-view pornography has become a
standard amenity at lodging that caters to business travelers. Hotels
operated under the industry's biggest names rake in millions from sex
films identified discreetly as "movie'' on customer bills.

Calling on Gospel to Call Off Debt
Following
the advice of their pastor, the men and women shuffled to the altar,
cut up their credit cards and placed them near his feet. "If we want to
have victory, we have to come out of financial bondage," the Rev. John
K. Jenkins of First Baptist Church of Glenarden shouted during a recent
sermon. Ordinarily Jenkins's sermons are about spiritual freedom and
ridding one's self of sin. But his message has taken a different turn
lately -- one that preaches the dangers of overspending and debt.

Choose You This Day: Life or Debt, by Rob Moll
"It's
only when the tide goes out," says Warren Buffett, "that you learn
who's been swimming naked." For a good long time, the American health
care system had its drawers down, but it didn't matter too much.
HillaryCare was summarily dismissed in the early '90s. The problems it
might have fixed weren't felt badly enough. Lately arguments for
universal health care have been about the unavailable care for the
uninsured. But still, no action. The vast majority in the country have
health insurance, even if they pay more and more for it every year.

Another courtroom victory for religious colleges
A federal
appeals court ruling that a Christian university in Colorado can
receive state scholarship money is the latest in a string of legal
victories for religious schools seeking public dollars. The most recent
case involved Colorado Christian University, a college of 2,000
students in suburban Denver where most students must attend chapel
weekly and sign a promise to emulate the life of Jesus and biblical
teachings. Colorado Christian faculty must sign a statement that that
the Bible is the "infallible Word of God."

the womb. The parents of Kia Johnson, 18, spoke after a funeral for
their daughter, whose body was found bound and eviscerated last week in
the Wilkinsburg home of Andrea Curry-Demus. "I forgive her for the
simple fact that if she wouldn't have took the baby to the hospital, we
would not have been able to find our daughter," said Johnson's mother,

On "Being Saved"
in Black America
While growing up in a very
religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being
Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and
mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such —
whatever it was.

Pastor
of the Week: Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer, Pastor of Faithful Central Bible
Church of Inglewood, CA
Dr. Ulmer serves as
the Senior Pastor-Teacher of Faithful Central Bible Church in
Inglewood, California. Under Dr. Ulmer’s steady leadership,
Faithful Central Bible Church has grown from 350 people to more than
13,000 since he arrived in 1982. Through a series of miraculous events,
the Lord made it possible for Faithful Central to purchase the Great
Western Forum, which has allowed the church to easily accommodate the
incredible growth it has seen. Now, Dr. Ulmer and Faithful Central
Bible Church are ready to go forth as Champions who are ready for
divine deployment. Dr. Ulmer envisions Faithful Central as a conduit of
God’s love and power as it reaches out to Los Angeles and
makes an eternal impact across the globe. In looking back over Dr.
Ulmer’s life, it’s easy to see that he has always
had a passion for realizing and obeying God’s will for his
life – to go along with an inexhaustible thirst for the
knowledge and wisdom of God. In his eyes, though, his greatest success
and satisfaction has come as the husband of his wife, Togetta, and the
father of their three children – daughters RoShaun and
Keniya, and son Kendan. In addition, he has two sons-in-law and five
beautiful granddaughters. Dr. Ulmer and Togetta have been married for
over 30 years and currently reside in Los Angeles, California. E-mail

Music
Minister of the
Week: Nicole C. Mullen
Much of who
we become is shaped by the people God places in our lives. We are all a
product of the love and wisdom we glean from family and friends who sow
into us. They guide and teach us, leaving an indelible impression not
just on our hearts and minds, but on future generations as well. On her
new Word Records collection, Sharecropper's Seed Vol. 1, Nicole C.
Mullen examines the gift of relationships. Whether saluting her
grandfather in the title track or sharing the tender mother's lullaby
"Babylove," Nicole celebrates the rich tapestry of life. "My granddad
is a man of few words, not a talker like we women in the family are,
but a sweet man," says Nicole. "He taught my mother the love for prayer
and power of prayer. It's amazing to see how God has honored him and
his life, even though he's probably never had more than 30-50 people in
his congregation. But he's been faithful. You can see how God has been
rewarding his faith and not just through me, but through other family
members honoring my granddad's faith. It's a testament to him, and at
the same time, I am encouraged, and want to do the same for those who
come after me. I want to do the same for those who come after me."
Nicole is doing that through her music. "I just aim for the heart and
hopefully that was accomplished on this album," she says. "There are
everyday people that are heroes to me. These are people who keep me
fired up and keep me going. These are the people that I aim toward, and
I want to get it right. Hopefully, at the end of the day, they will not
have just heard pretty music, but somewhere between the lines, pages,
and phrases, they will have heard the whisper of God to the depths of
their hearts." Get her new CD "A Dream to Believe" - available
everywhere July 22nd! E-mail address: ladylikelisa@yahoo.com.

MOTIVATING
VERSE: “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the
hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in
the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say
unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter
into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father
which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward
thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen
do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be
not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye
have need of, before ye ask him." —Matthew 6:5-8

Christian History
John Day - February
18, 1797 -- Birth of John Day, a "free person of color" who emigrated
to Liberia in 1830 as a participant in the American Colonization
Movement. In 1836 he became a missionary for the Triennial Convention

1859. Day was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence of

Liberia's second Supreme Court Justice. His brother Thomas was a
