Black Christian History
Hiram Revels: Revels
was born as a free black in North Carolina in 1822 but webt to school
in the Midwest. After becoming a minister in the AME Church, Revels
went to Mississippi in 1864 to work among the newly freed blacks. There
he became involved in politics and was elected by the Mississippi
legislature to fill out an unexpired Senate term. (It is
sometimes mistakenly claimed that Revels took the seat formerly held
by Jefferson Davis before the Civil War, but he actually
completed the term of the other Senator.) The second black senator was
also from Mississippi, Blanche K. Bruce, who served from 1875 to 1881.
Bruce was the last African American to serve in the Senate until the
election of Republican Edward Brooke of Massachusetts in 1996.
