Preacher
Guilty of Murdering Elderly Rancher
A
rural California preacher was convicted Monday of murdering an
85-year-old farmer after stealing more than $1 million from the elderly
bachelor's trust. Jurors in Stanislaus County Superior Court also found
Howard Douglas Porter guilty of attempted murder, embezzlement and
elder abuse. Prosecutors accused Porter, 57, of staging two auto wrecks
to cover up the more than $1.1 million he stole from Craig's sizable
fortune. Craig had entrusted the minister with administering his money
to build a museum to display his collection of antique farming
equipment.

Crumping for Christ
In front of the altar
of the Jubilee Church
on a recent Friday night, 16-year-old Jordan Taylor pulls a well-worn
Bible from his backpack and flips to an earmarked page to read aloud
from Ephesians 6:13. Therefore," he intones, "you put on the full armor
of God so that when the day of evil comes you may be able to stand your
ground and after, you've done everything to stand." Then, with a
hip-hop beat filling the room, Taylor stands rigid at first, his face
contorting as if he's in pain. His hands clutch at his shoulders,
torso, hips and legs as he symbolically puts on the armor of God. His
body convulses. He kicks and stomps, his knees bend, and he kneels on
the ground before rising to his feet, all in a matter of seconds.

Michelle Obama Describes
Duty as Mother-in-Chief
Forget the pearls.
Michelle Obama says her
best accessory is her husband. "Barack and I -- as partners, as friends
and as lovers -- we accessorize each other in many ways," said Obama,
wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. "The best thing
I love having on me is Barack on my arm and vice versa, whether it's
having him standing there smiling at me, or watching him mesmerize a
crowd or talk to some seniors in a senior center." Michelle Obama
discussed her marriage, fashion sense and how she balances motherhood
and work in an interview with Ebony magazine. The issue hits newsstands
nationwide on Aug. 12.

Negativity
the Norm in Presidential Campaign
For
all
the talk about John McCain's hard-hitting politics, Barack Obama is
hardly innocent. Both candidates and their allies are fully engaged in
creating unflattering caricatures of each other that they hope will
stick in voters' minds for the next three months. Obama and his
Democratic allies argue that the Republican is negative and offers
nothing new, while McCain and his Republicans claim the Democrat is
presumptuous and ill-prepared. "They're cynical," Obama recently
charged of McCain and his followers, adding: "They want to distract
people from talking about the real issues."

Marines
Ordered to Stay Longer in Afghanistan
The
Pentagon has ordered roughly 1,250 Marines serving as trainers for the
Afghan security forces to stay on the warfront almost a month longer to
continue a mission that military leaders say is a top priority,
according to a senior military official. In addition, Defense Secretary
Robert Gates has authorized the deployment of up to 200 other troops to
Afghanistan to support the Marines. That includes eight helicopter
crews that could be shifted from Iraq if commanders decide. The senior
military official spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition
of anonymity because the formal announcement has not yet been made.

Florida Man Dials 911,
Complains his Sub had no Sauce
The
sauce
for a spicy Italian sandwich was apparently a must have for one Florida
man. The man, Reginald Peterson, called 911 twice after a sandwich shop
left off the sauce. Peterson initially called the emergency number
Thursday so that officers could have his subs made correctly, according
to a police report. The second call was to complain that police
officers weren't arriving fast enough. Subway workers told police that
Peterson, 42, became belligerent and yelled when they were fixing his
order.

MDs
Urged to Quit Prostrate Screens in Elderly Men
Doctors
should stop routine prostate cancer screening of men over 75 because
there is more evidence of harm than benefit, a federal task force
advised Monday in a new blow to a much scrutinized medical test. The
U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which made the recommendation,
reported finding evidence that the benefits of treatment based on
routine screening of this age group "are small to none." However,
treatment often causes "moderate-to-substantial harms," including
erectile dysfunction and bladder control and bowel problems, the task
force said.

Graham Preaches Rebirth in Christ at North Korean Church
The
Rev.
Franklin Graham concluded his trip to North Korea on Sunday with a
message about rebirth through Jesus Christ at a Protestant church in
the capital city of Pyongyang. He shared from the book of John about
the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus. Graham told the hundreds
of North Koreans in the audience that they can be born again through
repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, according to the Christian relief
agency Samaritan’s Purse, which Graham is president of. The

Number
of New HIV Cases Underestimated by 40 Percent
The
number of Americans infected by the AIDS virus each year is much higher
than the government has been estimating, U.S. health officials
reported, acknowledging that their numbers have understated the level
of the epidemic. The country had roughly 56,300 new HIV infections in
2006 — about a 40 percent increase from the 40,000 annual
estimate used for the past dozen years. The new figure is due to a
better blood test and new statistical methods, and not a worsening of
the epidemic, officials said. But it likely will refocus U.S. attention
from the effect of AIDS overseas to what the disease is doing to this
country, said public health researchers and officials.

Woman
who Killed Preacher Husband Takes Custody of 3 Children
Mary
Winkler, the woman convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006
shooting death of her minister husband, has taken custody of her three
daughters, one of her lawyers said Monday. Rachael Putnam, a custody
attorney, said the former minister's wife picked the girls up Friday
from the slain man's parents, Dan and Diane Winkler. "She is absolutely
overjoyed," Putnam said. The lawyer said the children will live with
Winkler at her home near McMinnville, about 60 miles southeast of
Nashville. Winkler, 34, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter last
year for shooting her husband, 31-year-old Church of Christ minister
Matthew Winkler, at their Selmer home in March 2006.

Judge Grants Atheist Soldier More Time to File Arguments
Attorneys
for an atheist soldier suing the government over alleged religious
freedom violations have been granted more time to file arguments with
the federal court. A Kansas City, Kan., judge granted the request
Tuesday, giving attorneys for Spc. Jeremy Hall and the Military
Religious Freedom Foundation until Sept. 15 to file the documents.
Those arguments will respond to the government’s motion to
dismiss the case, which has been filed against an Army reservist and
Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

well to treatment and should be released soon. He remained hospitalized
Saturday. Smith says the pneumonia isn't related to an inflammatory
lung disease that Mac also has. That condition has been in remission
since 2005.

Obama's GOP Support
Groups, by David Limbaugh
I
suppose
I have to accept the insanity that some glassy-eyed Republicans are
considering voting for Barack Obama, but I don't have to like it.
Whether or not this is an example of the liberal media trying to create
rather than report news, The New York Times is reporting that small
enclaves of Republicans are meeting around the country to discuss their
support for Obama. Let's call them "support groups." One such support
group in Indiana is calling its attendees "whispering Republicans."

'Sarah's

The

was married and had a child. Critics of California's Prop. 4 file a

ballot measure that would require parents to be notified before an
abortion is performed on a minor acknowledged Friday that the
15-year-old on which "Sarah's Law" is based had a child and was in a
common-law marriage before she died of complications from an abortion
in 1994.

On "Being Saved"
in Black America
While growing up in a very
religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being
Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and
mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such —
whatever it was.

Music
Minister of the
Week: Dorinda Clark Cole
She’s
been called “the Rose of Gospel,” “the
church
girl,” and “evangelist” but more than
anything else,
three time Grammy award winner Dorinda Clark Cole is a fired up sister
for Christ and one of the most gifted vocalists in the music world
today. Carrying on the legacy of her mother, mass choir director
pioneer, the late Mattie Moss Clark, along with her award winning
contemporary gospel pioneering sisters who have influenced a generation
of singers, Dorinda Clark Cole boldly comes forth with her third solo
album, TAKE IT BACK. She utilizes her famous vocal runs and preaching
on the jazz infused “Faithful,” which gives the
message
that if you are faithful over a few things God will make you ruler over
many, if you remain faithful through your trials. The soul stirring
ballad “Yesterday,” showcases Dorinda’s
multi-octave
vocal range and will fill you with a calming message of peace and hope
that comes after the storms of life have passed. It
let’s
you know that although the situation might seem bad, it will be over
tomorrow. “If I Were,” the praise ballad sends a
message of
gratitude unto the Lord that will usher in a spirit of praise. With
songs that inspire, encourage and uplift, TAKE IT BACK is another
landmark project from the Clark dynasty. So what is her hope
for
this shining release? She simply says, “I want it to reach
avenues that we feel that it cannot to go, I want people to not give up
and know they can get through it.” I want it to reach those
who
are strung out on drugs. I want them to be able to hand it
over
to other drug abusers and say listen to it and have it bless their
lives.” E-mail: fks130@gmail.com.

Christian History
Elizabeth A. Coles was
born in Liberia, the daughter of missionaries. Her family returned to
Virginia in 1893. After high school, Coles wanted to be a missionary,
but as there was no support for unmarried female missionaries, she
prepared for a career as a teacher. One day she received a letter from
Edward H. Bouey, also a child of missionaries. At their first meeting,
he proposed to her, and they soon married. The couple went to Liberia,
where they continued her parents’ work, ran a school, and
began a
hospital. In 1929 they returned to Richmond with their children and an
adopted African youth. Bouey became a public school teacher but found
time to study theology at Virginia Union University and to earn a
master’s degree in education from Columbia University.
Knowing of
the lack of training available for ministers’ wives, Bouey
proposed a national association for them. Her idea was well received in
the region, and the first chapter of the National Association of
Ministers’ Wives was founded in Richmond in 1939. During the
next
year, Bouey organized other chapters in Virginia and corresponded with
ministers’ wives throughout the United States. The first
national
conference took place in Richmond in 1941, and Bouey was elected
president, a post she held until her death. Over the next sixteen
years, Bouey oversaw members from more than thirty states and from West
Africa; the establishment of the organization’s journal,
Ministers’ Wives Herald; and the purchase of a building in
Richmond. Since Bouey’s death the NAMW has become the
International Association of Ministers’ Wives and
Ministers’ Widows, with more than 40,000 members.
