Obama to Expand Bush's Faith-based Programs

Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans that would expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and — in a move sure to cause controversy — support their ability to hire and fire based on faith.  Obama was unveiling his approach to getting religious charities more involved in government anti-poverty programs during a tour and remarks Tuesday at Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio.

Conservative Anglicans Launch False Gospel Fight
Conservative Anglican leaders pledged Sunday to stay in the worldwide Anglican Communion, but they also announced plans to form a separate council of bishops to counter a movement within mainstream Anglicanism that they say promotes immoral behaviour. Their intentions were announced on the final day of the week-long Globan Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem, convened largely in response to growing acceptance of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex unions in North American churches.

Obama Opposes California Marriage Amendment; McCain Supports It
Republican John McCain says he supports a proposed constitutional marriage amendment in California and Democrat Barack Obama says he opposes it, putting the two men on opposite sides of a contentious issue that is certain to draw nationwide attention this fall. McCain's campaign sent a statement June 26 to ProtectMarriage.com, the pro-family campaign behind the effort to pass the November ballot initiative known as Proposition 8. The statement came weeks after a previous statement about his position on an amendment was criticized as less-than-clear.

Washington Wal-Mart Drops Planned Parenthood Partnership
Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of surgical abortions, won’t be hosting an advertising event this week that would have promoted its services among youth outside a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Washington State, thanks to the prompt reaction and grassroots efforts of pro-life groups. According to the American Life League (ALL), a large Richland Wal-Mart Supercenter dropped its association with the pro-choice group after a statement sent out by ALL called on pro-life advocates to bombard the retailer with hundreds of protesting e-mails and phone calls.

University Professors, Gary Flanigan and Luther G. Williams, Say Numbers Prove Bible's Divine Authorship, through their book, 111: The Media War Between Jesus Christ and Satan
In their new book, 111: The Media War Between Jesus Christ and Satan, university professors, Gary Flanigan and Luther G. Williams, argue that the Bible’s pervasive use of numbers provides conclusive evidence of God’s fingerprint.  “'I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end' is one of the most well known quotes in the book of Revelation,” maintains co-author Gary Flanigan. “Since the book of Revelation was originally written in Greek and Greek is an alphanumeric language meaning alpha is the same as one, and omega is the same as 800, isn’t it also the Revelation of Jesus that He’s a 1-800 number?”

Treasure Map Found Among the Dead Sea Scrolls keep Archaeologists and Historians in Suspense
"What would be most dramatic is if in fact the treasures that are described by the Copper Scroll—and perhaps revealed more fully in the Key Scroll—are in fact from the second temple. Finding them would in fact be the most dramatic archeological discovery of all time." After a Bedouin shepherd stumbled across a cave containing the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947, archaeologists discovered more caves and more scrolls, including one—called the Copper Scroll—that was completely unique. According to a CBN report, the Copper Scroll describes a hidden cache of gold and silver buried in more than 60 locations throughout Israel, most likely items from the Temple.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal Signs Law Allowing Intelligent Design in Public Schools
Louisiana public school teachers can now educate their students about the theory of intelligent design and scientific criticisms of Darwinian evolutionary theory thanks to a new law signed this week by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. The Louisiana Science Education Act now allows teachers to supplement the state's curricula with additional scientific materials, but groups opposed to any debate over the "origin of the species" have warned that the new law will become the origin of the lawsuits if they believe it facilitates religion.

Obama is no Joshua; denies uniqueness of Christ, Hell, by Cal Thomas
Barack Obama's presidential campaign plans to strike at the heart of the Republican base by attempting to woo Evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics to his side. The Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody first broke the story on his blog "The Brody File." Obama's campaign for the conservative Christian vote, which has largely gone to the Republican presidential candidate in recent elections, has been dubbed the "Joshua Generation Project." Joshua, Moses' successor, led the Israelites into the Promised Land. It wasn't the group that fled Egypt in the Exodus, though.

On "Being Saved" in Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such — whatever it was.

Christian Author of the Week:

Though Angela Benson began writing fiction in Miss Milizo’s fifth grade English class, her first book was not published until 1994, more than thirty years later! Her books have appeared on national, regional and local bestseller lists, and she has won several writing awards, including Best Multicultural Romance from Romantic Times magazine, and Best Contemporary Ethnic Romance from Affaire de Coeur magazine. She was a finalist for the 2000 Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement Award in Multicultural Romance. Angela’s tenth novel, Up Pops the Devil, will be published by HarperCollins in July 2008. Angela has an unusual background for a writer: She majored in mathematics at Spelman College and Industrial Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), and worked for fifteen years as an engineer in the telecommunications industry. She holds two Masters degrees, not in the liberal arts, but in operations research and human resources development. Music Minister of the Week: The Blind Boys of Alabama
Since 1939, The Blind Boys of Alabama have sung a fervent blend of traditional and contemporary Gospel music. Much has changed during these seven prolific decades. Stylistic phases have waxed and waned; personnel has come and gone. 78 r.p.m. records have given way to LPs, followed by eight-track tapes, cassettes, and CDs. The Blind Boys’ audience – once rigidly segregated and confined to traditional Gospel venues – now reflects the group’s eclectic, global following, while their repertoire has expanded to embrace secular songs with a strongly spiritual message. Such wide acceptance is also evidenced by four Grammy Awards, an honor that didn’t exist when the Blind Boys started out. Even so, the Blind Boys’ lengthy saga remains a steadfast testament to constancy. Singer Jimmy Carter, who was there when the group was first formed, leads the band today with the firm conviction, joyous commitment, and gravitas that befit an elder statesman.  E-mail address: info@blindambitionmgt.com. Inspirations

The Word of God for this Week
"Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD:neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength." -- Nehemiah 8:10

The Encouraging Word for this Week
"The root of all difficulties is a lack of the sense of the Presence of God." --Emmett Fox

The Prayer Motivator for this Week
MOTIVATING VERSE: "And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint." --Luke 18:1:1

PRAYER QUOTE: "Pray often, for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice for God, and a scourge for Satan." --John Bunyan

The Soul-Winning Motivator for this Week
"And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." --Acts 5:42

SOUL-WINNING QUOTE: “A good witness isn't like a salesman, emphasis is on a person rather than a product. A good witness is like a signpost. It doesn't matter whether it is old, young, pretty, ugly; it has to point the right direction and be able to be understood. We are witnesses to Christ, we point to him.” --John White

Black Christian History
Marilyn Lewis - February 20, 2000 -- A heart attack claims the life of Marilyn Lewis, volunteer at the United States Center for World Mission who helped lay the groundwork for their African American Mobilization Division. A school teacher in Pasadena, CA, Marilyn often spoke of her desire to serve as a missionary in Brazil, reaching the descendants of those who had come from Africa. Just prior to her unexpected death, Marilyn had written a call-to-action article: "Just look at an African-American church today and you can see testimony to our new era: richly decorated, air conditioned sanctuaries with carpeted floors are now quite common. Many drive to church in the latest model cars. Today, instead of working the tables at restaurants, many African Americans own them. God has blessed us. Now it is time for the African American to bless the world in evangelization efforts. In the past, many African Americans cried because they could not become involved in missionary work. But now the doors are wide open and we are without excuse."
