(VIDEO) Obama Addresses NAACP Convention - Stands By Message of Personal Responsibility
Democrat Barack Obama received a prideful
welcome from the annual NAACP convention Monday night, but in a
stirring speech to the nation's oldest civil rights organization, he
nonetheless insisted blacks must show greater responsibility for
improving their own lives. The man who could become the first black
president urged Washington to provide more education and economic
assistance. He called on corporate America to exercise greater social
responsibility. But he also received his most lusty applause as he
urged blacks to demand more of themselves.

Sudan's President, Omar al-Bashir, charged with genocide in Darfur
The prosecutor for the International
Criminal Court sought an arrest warrant Monday for Sudan's president on
charges of waging a campaign of genocide and rape in Darfur, a
high-risk strategy that could backfire against the people in the
war-torn desert region. The indictment marked the first time
prosecutors at the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal have
issued charges against a sitting head of state, though President Omar
al-Bashir was unlikely to face trial any time soon. Sudan denounced the
indictment as a political stunt, saying it would ignore any arrest
order and was considering all options, including an unspecified
military response.

On "Being Saved"
in Black America
While growing up in a very
religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being
Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and
mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such —
whatever it was.

Inspirations
The
Word of God
for this Week
“My
grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in
weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities,
that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in
distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I
strong.” —2 Corinthians 12:9-10
The
Encouraging Word for this Week
"If there is one
characteristic more than others that contemporary public worship needs
to recapture, it is this awe before the surpassingly great and gracious
God." —Henry Sloane Coffin
The
Prayer Motivator for this Week
MOTIVATING
VERSE: “And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his
mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be
with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not
grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” —1
Chronicles 4:9-10
PRAYER
QUOTE: "Always respond to every impulse to pray. The impulse to pray
may come when you are reading or when you are battling with a text. I
would make an absolute law of this – always obey such an
impulse." —Martyn Lloyd-Jones
The
Soul-Winning Motivator for this Week
"And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.." —Matthew 4:19
SOUL-WINNING
QUOTE: "We should not ask, "What is wrong with the world?" for that
diagnosis has already been given. Rather, we should ask, "What has
happened to the salt and light?" —John R. W. Stott
Black
Christian History
Henry Garnet -
February 12, 1865 -- Presbyterian minister Henry Garnet becomes the
first African American to preach a sermon in the U.S. House of
Representatives. Born a slave in Maryland in 1815, Garnet escaped to
New England with his father when he was nine years old. In 1852 Garnet
went to Jamaica as a Presbyterian missionary. Bad health forced his
return to the U.S. in 1855 where he became very active in the
