Sharpton defends Jackson despite Obama comments
The Rev. Al Sharpton on Tuesday defended the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has come under fire for his recent crude off-air criticism of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. "We have all made mistakes. We have all erred, and we ought not try to sugar coat when we err," Sharpton told a gathering of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in this New Orleans suburb. "But we should not throw away everything when we err, and to say that Rev. Jackson made a mistake is correct, but to act like Rev. Jesse Jackson is not pivotal to our movement, our history ... is wrong."

Rick Warren to Pastors: "Pastors Shouldn't Endorse Politicians"
Popular megachurch pastor Rick Warren said he does not believe pastors should endorse political candidates in a recent interview held weeks ahead of his highly-anticipated leadership and compassion forum, which will feature presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. “I don’t think it’s right for pastors to endorse [a political candidate] in the first place,” Warren said on a recent CNN interview when asked if he thinks McCain was right to disavow controversial pastors John Hagee and Rod Parsley. “I would never endorse a candidate. I would never campaign for a candidate,” he added.

Presidential Politics and Media: Black Radio is to Obama what Limbaugh is to McCain
Warren Ballentine, one of black talk radio’s new stars, was on a tear against Senator John McCain as he broadcast from the Greenbriar Mall here last week, blithely dismissing Mr. McCain’s kind words about Senator Barack Obama at the recent N.A.A.C.P. national convention. “He came out talking about how good of a race Barack Obama was running, and how proud he was of Barack,” Mr. Ballentine said. “You know he went back home and said, ‘I can’t believe I spoke in front of all those Negroes today!’ ”  “He was pandering to the crowd, talking about how he felt when Martin Luther King Jr. died,” Mr. Ballentine went on.

The lawyers for famed Stuart lawyer Willie Gary say they will file today what they believe will be the silver bullet that could have a civil suit accusing him of sex assault dismissed. The motion includes new information about Gary's former employee and accuser, Jillian Nedd. West Palm lawyer Michael Pike included in his filing two X-rated homemade DVDs of Gary's single adult son, Kenneth, having sex with Nedd. Corrupt NBA referee gets 15-month sentence
Disgraced ex-NBA official Tim Donaghy admitted that he'd brought shame on his profession Tuesday as a federal judge sentenced him to 15 months behind bars for a gambling scandal that still has the league on the defensive. U.S. District Judge Carol Amon sentenced Donaghy to prison time plus three years of supervised release, saying he'd let the sport down by taking thousands of dollars from a professional gambler in exchange for inside tips on games — including ones he refereed.

The Man Behind the Byline Isn't Behind the Article. So, Who Is? by Jeffrey Birnbaum
Charles Steele Jr. is the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a very prominent fellow. Two of his distinguished predecessors were Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph David Abernathy, leaders of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s. This week, the SCLC is celebrating its 50th anniversary at a convention in New Orleans. Steele is upset about something that happened before the celebration. A handful of Southern newspapers published an op-ed article under Steele's name on July 18 that his lawyer and the SCLC say he did not write or authorize.

More unmarried couples living together
The number of opposite-sex couples who live together, less than a million 30 years, hit 6.4 million in 2007, show federal data released Monday. Cohabiting couples now make up almost 10% of all opposite-sex U.S. couples, married and unmarried. That's up from 2006, when the Census bureau reported 5 million unmarried, opposite-sex households. But that figure was based on a question that some respondents might have found unclear. In the 2007 supplemental survey sample of 100,000 households, Census asked more directly whether respondents had "a boyfriend/girlfriend or partner in the household" and found 1.1 million more couples.

>Christian Publishers Offer Tales of the Football Turf
Tyndale House Publishers, a Christian company that was founded in 1962 to print a more reader-friendly version of the Bible, has had one of its biggest successes in the last year with a string of books on a slightly less religious topic: football. Next Sunday Tyndale will have its third football-related book in a year reach the New York Times best-seller list, No. 3 on the “advice, how-to and miscellaneous” category — unusual for a publisher whose most profitable non-Bible product until now has been the “Left Behind” series of apocalyptic novels.

Homosexual sex is a sin, say four in five Protestants
Most Christians believe gay sex is a sin and that practising gays should not be ordained. A survey by ComRes of 517 Protestant Christians in Britain found that only 3 per cent of nonCatholic Christians believe homosexuality is not a sin, while 81 per cent say it is and 15 per cent say “it is more complicated than this”. Taking into account all Protestant denominations, 81 per cent believe that gay sex is sinful. The survey also found that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, lacks majority support. Only one in three Anglicans said Dr Williams represented their views.

Hate for Liberals and Homosexuals Drove Gunman, Police Say
A man who the police say entered a Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday and shot eight people, killing two, was motivated by a hatred for liberals and gay people, Chief Sterling P. Owen IV of the Knoxville Police Department said Monday. “It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,” Chief Owen said of the suspect, Jim D. Adkisson, 58. “We have recovered a four-page letter in which he describes his feelings and the reason that he claims he committed these offenses.”

Oppose Homosexual Bishops and Homosexual Marriage, Anglicans Urged
A group of senior Anglican clergy has told the Lambeth Conference that liberal churches must end the ordination of gay bishops and stop blessing same-sex relationships if the Communion is to arrest its slide towards a permanent split. The working party given the task of finding possible solutions to the rift told the 650 bishops meeting in Canterbury that traditionalist churches in Africa must also stop setting up parallel church bodies in the United States as homes for congregations splitting away from the American Church because of the dispute.

Obama says Muslim issue is 'no-win situation'
Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that responding to incorrect assertions that he's a Muslim has put him in a "no-win situation." If he allows the Internet rumors and other misleading information to go unchallenged, it's an affront to his Christianity and could cost him support from voters who don't want a Muslim in the White House. But if he aggressively confronts the rumors, it could suggest to some that there's something wrong with being a Muslim.  "This is a classic example of a no-win situation," Mr. Obama told hundreds of journalists gathered in Chicago for the UNITY convention for journalists of color.

On "Being Saved" in Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such — whatever it was.

Music Minister of the Week: Rev. Timothy Wright, Jr.
Reverend Timothy Wright is no stranger to gospel music- in fact; he has become an anchor for gospel choirs across the country. His music is considered "Sunday Morning Ready" with a diverse array of traditional and contemporary gospel music. He is also the pastor and founder of the Grace Tabernacle Christian Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Rev. Wright first developed his talents at the St. John's Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God in Brooklyn, N.Y. In his spare time, he wrote poetry and began to play the piano at age 12. This would soon lead to him composing for the church's choir. A pivotal moment is his budding career came in 1969 when he began playing the piano for the late Bishop F.D. Washington at the Washington Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Brooklyn, N.Y.. Through that association, he was selected as organist for the Rev. Isaac Douglas and the N.Y. community choir. With the exception of one, all the selections on Douglas' classic best-selling 1971 album, "Let's Go Higher", were written by Rev. Wright . This album was a landmark recording in the early development of contemporary choir sound. In 1976, he founded the Timothy Wright Concert Choir. Some of the choir's award winning and best selling releases includes, Who's On The Lord's Side and Do You Know The Light. He has also recorded with choirs across the county. Of these recordings, his most memorable hits include: Troubles Don't Last Always, Master Can You Use Me and Yes I'm A Believer. In addition to this, he also recorded a Stellar Award winning project with Myrna Summers, entitled We're Gonna Make It. In fact, one of his projects, Come Thou Almighty King, which has garned national recognition, was recorded with a 500 voice choir, made up of New York's best gospel artists. Without question, Timothy Wright proves once again that he is the "Godfather" of gospel music.  Get Rev. Wright's latest CD "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!" and please continue to pray for the entire Wright family and the Grace Tabernacle church family. Website: www.myspace.com/reverendtimothywright.

Black Christian History
Reverend William W. Colley - an African American Baptist missionary to Africa; founder of the Colored Baptist Missions in Africa. He served in West Africa in 1875 as an assistant to W.J. David, a white missionary from Mississippi. In 1880, Colley was instrumental in the formation of the Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, an African American organization which sponsored and sent Black missionaries to Africa; in 1883 he returned to Africa under their direction. This organization merged with two others in 1895 to form the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc, the first national organization for African American Baptists. Colley traveled widely, lecturing to gain support for the African missions. At one of his lectures, a notice read "Eight years in the Wilds of Africa, where he learned to eat snail soup and monkey stews...The colored Baptists have supported 13 missionaries in Africa during the last ten years, by whom hundreds of heathen have been led to Christ."
