The Cowboys suffered their first loss of the season in a stunning 26-24
defeat to the team's archrival Washington Redskins on Sunday in Dallas. Quarterback Jason Campbell was poised in the pocket throughout the game, completing 20 of 31 passes for 231 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Running back Clinton Portis ran for 121 yards on the ground, while receiver Santana Moss torched the Dallas secondary for 145 yards on eight catches.
"It's a brawl," said Redskins head coach Jim Zorn. "Our guys laid it on the line."
Desperate for a last-second comeback, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo hit receiver Miles Austin for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining in the game.
But the ensuing on-side kick went right through the hands of Dallas receiver Sam Hurd to end the rally.
"The reality of it is, you have the opportunity to go 16-0 every year in the regular season, but that's not realistic," said Romo. "We're a confident bunch. I think we'll come back next week with a lot to prove."
Washington (3-1) won for only the second time in its last 13 visits to Texas Stadium. It was also the team's final trip to that site as the Cowboys move into their new stadium next season.
The Redskins' defence also did a great job in stuffing Dallas' vaunting running game, limiting power back Marion Barber to only eight carries for 26 yards.
Romo finished with 300 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he also threw a costly interception in the loss.
The victory by the Redskins will no doubt put the rest of the NFC East on notice.
Considered the best division in the league, the division sports Dallas (3-1), the Super Bowl champion New York Giants (3-0) and Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) -- all teams that were projected to finish ahead of the Redskins this season.
Yet after an uninspired loss to the Giants in the opening week, Washington has looked every bit the part of a playoff team with wins against New Orleans, Arizona and Dallas.
