"Editors at both papers feel there are some common-sense ways we can save money through cooperation that can free valuable resources in both newsrooms," Mr. Mong wrote in an e-mail sent to The News' staff Friday just before noon.
"I can assure you we have no intention of diluting our powerful brand. But I do know there are ways to move forward with the Star-Telegram , save money and continue to provide the outstanding unique content we are known for."
The News, owned by A.H. Belo Corporation, and the Star-Telegram , owned by McClatchy, recently signed a newspaper distribution agreement under which each company will deliver a portion of the other's papers in some circulation areas.
In Friday trading, shares of A.H. Belo fell 12 cents to $3.34. McClatchy shares fell 26 cents to $1.97.
