"That experience of being cut loose from everything that seemed to matter to me initiated a period of intense pain and searching in my relationship with God and my understanding of myself. This book is about the experience of walking with that pain and eventually reaching the other side where the pain no longer dominates" (from the introduction).
Dr. Logan places the blame on himself for not being the husband and the father God called him to be, and thus, he marginalized his children and the effects the divorce might have had on them, in the book. He sees them as the victims of his failures who deserve to be protected. He makes a very heartfelt apology to his four children in the introduction.
Dr. Logan writes in his book: "Metaphorically, people go into marriage with their suitcases packed, but never really dare to unpack them. When things turn south, their bags are packed and they are ready to go. This is why so many people have two or three marriages that go exactly the same way. They keep doing the same thing over and over again.
I find myself wishing for a way to convince young married couples to empty their suitcases and wash or allow God to wash their clothes together. An even better idea might be to have engaged couples open their suitcases in front of each other, exposing the dirty laundry or poor fashion styles before they get into the marriage. Still, the most important skill will be for them to wash each other's laundry, to have the grace for each other that Christ has for us, and that is a skill that only God can teach."
