Shaw University is the oldest black university in the South, founded in 1865, and it has been a valued member of the Raleigh community in all that time. Alumni have gone on to leadership roles here and elsewhere, and the school has kept going through some very difficult days. The same will be true, we trust and hope, for its future.
President Clarence Newsome is leaving, and the university will begin a search for a new leader. Shaw is $20 million in debt, and trustees will give $50,000 apiece to help. Newsome's charge upon taking over six years ago was to boost enrollment from 2,700 to 10,000 and to increase the endowment from $15 million to $50 million. It may be that a new leader will have to revise those goals, reflecting the reality of an economic downturn that is liable to last for a while.
Shaw has carved out a role with an emphasis on teaching and strong ties to the community. Students have been active in a variety of organizations while enrolled. With a good push from alums and friends, and the support of its proud home town, Shaw can regain its security.
