Defender Luis Marin, captain of Costa Rica's last two World Cup teams, ended a three-year retirement from international duty when he was called up by new coach Rene Simoes on Friday.
The 35-year-old Marin, who stopped playing for Costa Rica after the 2006 World Cup, was part of a 28-man squad for Costa Rica's final two regular World Cup qualifying matches next month.
Costa Rica is No. 4 in the North and Central American and Caribbean region. Only the top three teams qualify automatically for berths in the World Cup. The No. 4 team faces a playoff with the No. 5 from South America for another spot.
"Luis Marin has played in two World Cups, he plays well as a sweeper back and his experience is crucial," Simoes said.
Simoes of Brazil was hired last week to replace Rodrigo Kenton, who was fired after Costa Rica lost its last three qualifiers.
Simoes also left off five players who played for Kenton in his last match: Celso Borges, Christian Bolanos, Carlos Hernandez, Froylan Ledezma and Bryan Ruiz.
