Kansas Suspends Morningstar After DWI Arrest

Kansas junior guard Brady Morningstar was suspended for the first semester after his arrest early Saturday for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, coach Bill Self said.

Morningstar, 23, was stopped and arrested on the Kansas Turnpike near the East Lawrence around 3:25 a.m., said turnpike spokeswoman Lisa Callahan. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail around 3:40 a.m. Online jail records show he was released on $250 bond at 6:01 a.m.

Self said the team is still looking into the matter, but he stressed that regardless of the reasons for Morningstar being stopped, he was in "serious" violation of curfew.

"Because of that and his extremely poor judgment last night, I have decided to suspend him for the first semester from all competition and travel," Self said in statement. "We will support him through this, but needless to say I am very disappointed in the sequence of events that took place last night."

Self said Morningstar will remain on the team and participate in all other team functions. The returning starter from last season's 27-8 team is the son of Roger Morningstar, who was a starter on the Jayhawks' 1974 Final Four team.

The arrest is the latest embarrassment for the Jayhawks, who are expected to be ranked as high as No. 1 in the preseason poll. It comes as the university police open a disorderly conduct investigation into a brawl last month that involved members of the football and men's basketball teams.

Self said team rules have become much more stringent since last week.
