They call him the miracle man.

David Walters should have been dead six years ago.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma - bone cancer - in 2001, he was given 15 to 18 months to live by an oncologist but is alive today after what he describes as a series of miracles.

The first, and most startling, was his recovery from acute renal failure.

His oncologist thought there was something wrong with blood tests that showed dangerous levels of a waste product in his blood had inexplicably dropped by two-thirds.

"He said it was a miracle,'' Mr Walters said.

He believes it was also a miracle that he was the one chosen for a trial of a new drug to combat the cancer, and that one of evangelical Pastor Benny Hinn's associates prayed for him to be healed during a conference.

Mr Walters said he was not in remission but his cancer had "plateaued".

Although he acknowledges the benefits of excellent medical care, he believes his survival is thanks to God.

"It was my belief that God would heal me and it was just the power of prayer. Everyone prayed for me."

Mr Walters, a builder, said God picked him for a miracle because he had work for him.

He has spent the past four years overseeing the fit-out of the C3 church at Kawana Waters, which was officially opened this week.

"As a result of all the miracles, I'd made a promise to God that I'd finish the fit-out of this church," he said.

He described the project as another miracle, because it was worth $2 million but cost only $500,000, thanks to the generosity of businesses and volunteers.

The church auditorium was opened on Thursday night by Pastor Phillip Pringle, who founded the C3 church, which is now one of the world's fastest-growing Christian movements.

Mr Walters said he was not sure what God had lined up for him next but said C3 owned 12 hectares of land at Meridan Plains.

And building plans?

"There's something in the pipeline," he said.
