Golden State Warriors center Andris Biedrins' free throw shot is "broken."
Golden State Warriors center Andris Biedrins is on pace to set the record for worst free throw percentage in a single season, a record set by Boston Celtics center Garfield Smith in the 1971-72 season.
Call a shot doctor, not coach Don Nelson, who is frustrated with Biedrins' efforts at the foul line.
Biedrins was 4-for-25 (16%) from the line entering Tuesday, on target to set the record for worst free throw percentage in an NBA season (minimum 20 attempts). Boston Celtics center Garfield Smith set the record in 1971-72 (6-for-31, 19.4%).
Things have gotten so bad, Nelson has tried to persuade Biedrins, 23, to shoot his free throws underhanded in the manner of Warriors great Rick Barry. Nelson also thinks Biedrins is tentative on the floor because he doesn't want to get fouled.
"I've worked with him. I've had everybody work with him," Nelson told the San Francisco Chronicle. "He's never going to be a very good free throw shooter because of his technique. It's unfixable. You can't fix the problems that he has.
"To me, I would go underhand. ... His (one-handed) technique is, he doesn't keep his hand on a platter (with his open palm parallel to the ground before shots), which all great shooters do. He tilts it. If I have him shoot one-handed, the ball's going to slip off. So there are major problems with his technique, and he's not willing to change."
