"I feel better about introducing somebody to God as opposed to giving an elder, church mother something to listen to. She already knows it, she's got it!" says Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, in a recent interview with ESSENCE.
The group just snagged up an Image Award for "Outstanding Song," for God In Me, at the 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
With all the controversy surrounding their secular collaborations, and poor live performance choices (Touring with R&B crooner Maxwell), some have questioned the intentions of the group.
"We want to continue to reach as many people as we can," they say, which means creating a more urban-infused sound and teaming up with those who have mainstream appeal like Kanye West and Common, even if it isolates them from the Christian community to a degree.
Undeterred by the mounting controversies, Mary Mary is willing to risk the loss of support from the Church and its elder, church mothers, in exchange for wider acceptance and broader appeal. Admittedly, their album, The Sound, has been very successful, but the heavy promotion and overabundance of public appearances, while good for their careers, are a strain on the family. "Lately, it's been a struggle for me because I'm without a nanny," says Tina, to which her sister Erica responds with a laugh, "You are so bougie! Momma had nine kids, with no nanny!"
Hmmm, it appears that Mary Mary doesn't have the same parenting philosophy as the elder, church mothers do either, bless their hearts. Although "The Mary's" may not choose to make music for them, it still might be a good idea to learn from them. Just saying... Below is a video of the two discussing what they've been up to recently, and what new projects are in the works, and they're doing it in that hilarious way that only they can.
