Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon has been spending his days looking for a new defenseman, size up the middle and another gritty player or two.
Panthers GM Dale Tallon will spend the next four days competing in the U.S. Senior Open in Sammamish, Wash. He has called it his "biggest thrill in golf."
But Tallon hopes his next four days are only spent hunting for birdies as he competes in the U.S. Senior Open at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
"I would say this is my biggest thrill in golf, although winning the Canadian national junior golf tournament in 1969 was pretty special," Tallon said.
Tallon said the added enjoyment of playing in the tournament is that he didn't believe he could make the field. Tallon once shot a 63 on a par-72 course, and he has had success in top amateur tournaments and on the celebrity tour.
But since he was hired by the Panthers on May 17, his time has been devoted to rebuilding the Panthers instead of refining his putting stroke.
Before winning a U.S. Open qualifier in Illinois, he had played about six times in six weeks.
"I got home from the NHL draft on Sunday and had a 9:52 tee time on Monday morning, and I went at the urging of my wife who said get out and get some fresh air," Tallon said, laughing. "So I went for a walk and ended up playing well, and here I am."
Tallon won the qualifier with a 1-over par 73, but he hasn't played much since because he has been busy signing players and hiring new personnel.
"I'm really going on fumes," he said.
