
For the second consecutive season, the Washington Nationals and Scott Boras each resorted to a four-corners offense before teaming up on a buzzer-beating contract for a mega-prospect.
Bryce Harper reached agreement on a deal with the Nationals minutes before Monday night's deadline.
Monday night, it was Bryce Harper's turn to feel the butterflies as the Nationals and Boras finally reached agreement on a major league contract several reports said was worth $9.9 million, the main event on a night of last-minute deals.
On a conference call with news reporters, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said the agreement came "inside the last minute" of the deadline.
In all, three of the top five picks reached deals in the last 15 minutes or so before the midnight deadline, and 29 of the top 32 picks agreed to terms.
Harper, who hit 31 home runs as a 17-year-old catcher for the College of Southern Nevada, received a major league contract, which will cost the Nationals a 40-man roster spot and put the onus on Harper to reach the majors quickly.
