
They are breathlessly awaiting Manny Ramirez's arrival on the South Side of Chicago, but while the White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers are discussing a potential trade, it's quite possible the unimaginable will occur.
The White Sox have indicated a desire to acquire Manny Ramirez. Bnut now that the Dodgers are in contention, they are more inclined to keep him.
Ramirez might be staying put.
"(We're) not inclined to move anyone," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told USA TODAY, "so long as we have a chance."
The Dodgers, coming off a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with their 7-1 victory Thursday, suddenly are right back in the wild-card race. The Dodgers (66-62) are five games behind the San Francisco Giants (71-57). Their fate might be determined in the next six games with three games apiece against the surging Colorado Rockies (68-56) and Giants.
"To play as well as we have," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said, "if this doesn't give us confidence, I don't know what the heck is going to do it."
The White Sox, who have not bothered to disguise their attempts to acquire Ramirez, have one team to worry about in their playoff hopes -- the Minnesota Twins, who hold a 3½-game lead in the AL Central. The White Sox face the New York Yankees this weekend in a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field, with the Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays tied atop the AL East with 78-49 records. Yet the Yankees and Rays may have the safety net of the wild card, with the two teams having a 5½-game bulge over the Boston Red Sox (73-55).
