In a statement, Jackson said she is "confident the ship is sailing in the right direction" after nearly four years as EPA administrator, and she is looking forward to new challenges.
Jackson indicated she would leave office after the president's State of the Union address, expected in late January or early February.
The Associated Press reports that "Jackson's tenure was marked by high-profile brawls with industry and congressional Republicans over such issues a global warming pollution, the Keystone XL oil pipeline and new controls on coal-fired plants."
Obama praised Jackson, saying in a statement that she "has shown an unwavering commitment to the health of our families and our children."
