Despite efforts by NASA to dispel the Mayan calendar-based prediction the world will end Dec. 21, fears of a coming "doomsday" prevail.

From the United States to as far away as Shanghai, authorities are receiving emergency calls from panicked citizen fearing "the end."
"I have received letters from young people who say they are contemplating suicide. I've received a few from mothers who say they're planning to kill their children and themselves," David Morrison, a NASA scientist who answers letters from the public, said.
