United States Will Not Stop Sending Military Aid to Egypt Despite Ouster of President Mohammed Morsi

The United States will not stop sending military aid to Egypt following the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi.

U.S. law requires non-humanitarian aid be cut off in the event of a military coup.

But the Obama administration is signaling it will continue to work with Egypt's interim government.

"It would not be in the best interests of the United States to immediately change our assistance program to Egypt," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Monday, after acknowledging there are "millions of Egyptians who have different views about what happened."

Some members of Congress want to withhold $1.5 billion in U.S. aid if a civilian government isn't restored soon.
