Thankfully, my father refused.

Why Racial Justice is a Gospel Issueby Russell D. Moore As I write this, news reports tell us that we just might see, by the time you read this, the election of the first African-American president of the Southern Baptist Convention. This is significant for all sorts of reasons: one being, of course, that the SBC was founded, partly, to protect the "right" of slaveholders to be missionaries. It's important also because it's a test for whether the SBC will go forward with the gospel and mission we say we believe.Read More

Is Preaching In America In a Bad State?![]() Is preaching in America in a particularly bad state? Several commentators have recently raised the question, yet it has a long history. "It has become an impertinent Vein among People of all Sorts," wrote Jonathan Swift in the 1720s, "to hunt after what they call a good Sermon, as if it were a Matter of Pastime or Diversion." ![]() |

It's not the style or quality of musical performance that brings multiracial churches together, but a commitment to common participation.

Last year, with the opening of the Washington, D.C. memorial, our country rightfully honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The reverend's powerful voice called for the non-violent protest of the civil rights injustices African-Americans faced on a daily basis.

As a senior in high school, I was president of the honor society, but I didn't know what I wanted to "do with my life." I did know I wanted to go to college -- everyone did -- and I figured I could figure it all out when I got to the University of Florida campus. This was in 1980.
